Noni Juice – A Brief Introduction

So, you’ve heard about all the great things that noni juice might be able to do for you. But what is it exactly?

Noni juice is made from the fruit of the noni tree, morinda citrifolia. The noni fruit is native to southeast Asia, and is widely grown in tropical areas around the world. It is also known by such colloquial names as Indian mulberry and beach mulberry. The fruit is yellowish-white in colour when ripe, and around 4-7cm in size. Although it is a staple food in a few areas, it is not generally eaten in most places, thanks to its strong smell and bitter taste. Instead, the noni fruit (and other parts of the noni tree such as the leaves and bark) are more widely valued for their other, non-food uses, and for their medicinal properties in particular.

Although the noni plant has only recently gained attention in the west, other cultures have been using noni juice and other noni products for hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of years. Throughout Asia, Polynesia, India, South America, various Pacific islands and other areas, the noni plant has been used to treat ailments as diverse as fever, eyesight problems, skin problems, respiratory issues and digestive difficulties, amongst others. Such wide-ranging applications are part of the reason for noni juice’s popularity in the west today, and also for the scepticism with which it is regarded by many people, who often see such claims as over-inflated. Still, sceptics aside, the fact remains that many people, both today and throughout history, appear to benefited greatly by using noni juice and other noni products.

Today in the west noni is most often consumed in juice form. As relatively few people are in a position to consume freshly made noni juice, most of the noni juice that is available to buy has been treated to some extent in order to preserve it. When buying noni juice it is extremely important to select a brand that has been subjeced to minimal processing, as heat treatment, irradiation and other preservation techniqes can seriously impair the benefits of the juice. You are basically looking for noni juice that is as close to its natural state as possible.

noni fruitNoni juice is somewhat bitter, and not to everyone’s taste. While it can be mixed with other juices to make it more palatable, many people prefer to take noni in other forms, such as capsules containing dehydrated noni fruit. Again, more information about other noni products will be provided soon.

Tahitian noni juice currently has the highest profile, and many claim that noni fruits grown in Tahiti produce superior juice to those grown elsewhere. This is not necessarily the case; while it is true that some excellent noni juices do originate in Tahiti, noni juice from Hawaii, New Zealand and many other noni-producing countries can be just as good. The quality of noni juice has much more to do with how the fruit is grown and processed than with where it originates.

So there you have it: in summary, noni juice is a time-honoured product that many people have found to be helpful when healing from a wide range of ailments, and in maintaining excellent health thereafter. While it is wrong to claim that noni juice and other noni products can heal any particular illness, or are effective for everyone (and you should be wary of manufacturers who make such grandiose claims), noni juice is certainly worth investigating further if you are interested in being as healthy as you can be.
