Many of the beauty products you see on the pharmacy shelves or advertised in magazines are laden with potentially toxic chemicals that can be absorbed through the pores and build up in the body. This build up can lead to feelings of tiredness, malaise and even physical illness. More and more people are saying no to the use of poisonous cosmetics, and seeking natural alternatives instead. I’m one of them, and make a point of avoiding chemical nasties.

The availability of natural beauty products is growing each year, but in some cases, they’re not quite as ‘natural’ as the label would have you believe, so it’s always vital to check the ingredients of any product you buy. And even those natural toiletries that are the real deal can be on the expensive side. For these reasons, many people prefer to make their own skincare and haircare products.

By making your own cosmetics, you not only know exactly what is going into them, but you can save a lot of money too. And it doesn’t have to be difficult either, as you can see from these three simple DIY beauty treatments.

1. Making A Face Mask

You can whip together an effective face mask from the ingredients you probably have in your kitchen cupboards right now. Buying healthy food not only provides the nutrition you need, but can nourish the skin from the outside too.

To make a face mask at home, mash a carrot using a food processor or blender. Combine with a mashed avocado, one beaten egg and a couple of tablespoons of honey. Stir the mixture well, apply to the skin, and leave it for about 15 minutes. As an egg substitute, try a spoon of coconut oil instead. You might want to wear an old top just in case the mixture drips onto your clothing. Rinse the mask off with cool water.

After rinsing, you can follow up with a simple toner made with grated cucumber or water with a little lemon juice. This will help to tighten the skin and keep it looking good. Finish off with a touch of coconut or olive oil to keep the skin supple and soft.

2. Making Your Own Hair Conditioner

A hair conditioner can be invaluable if your hair’s prone to tangling. As with the face mask, you can make your own easily, and save money too.

Teapot, leaf and oilAll you need to do is mix one egg yolk with one tablespoon of castor oil. Apply the mixture to your hair, leave for around 10 minutes, and rinse thoroughly. Eggs are a good base for a conditioner, and if you want to experiment, you could try mixing in herbs, essential oils (properly diluted) or other oils such as olive oil or coconut oil (in fact, coconut oil on its own makes a great natural hair conditioner too!). A good egg alternative for the hair is apple cider vinegar – one tablespoon will do.

3. DIY Cream & Scrub For Hands and Feet

The hands and feet get a lot of wear during an average day, and deserve a bit of TLC. Set some time aside each week to give them a treat by mixing half a cup of olive oil with sea salt. Massage the mixture into the skin on the hands and feet and leave for a few minutes. After they’ve had a good soak, rinse off with warm water. The oil will help soften the skin, while the salt acts as an exfoliator, and can help to remove dead skin.

These are just three ideas for home-made beauty treatments, and if you’re like many people, once you start experimenting, you’ll want to keep going! I’ll be adding more ideas in future articles, but a quick Google search will reveal hundreds if not thousands of ideas for other recipes, and there are some great books available on the topic too. Here are a few to consider:
